Slow VPN connection on WHS 2011 to Windows 7 computer

So I have recently setup a VPN on my WHS 2011 box, i did this because I wanted to be able to upload documents to my home server (over 2gb) and have full access to my server from anywhere, i also did not feel safe using just any random Joes coffee shop Wi-Fi when I needed to check something so i decided to setup this VPN.

Now for how I set it up, I followed this guide here. http://thedigitalmediazone.com/2012/03/26/how-to-set-up-vpn-for-windows-home-server-2011/ I followed those directions very close and did exactly what they did.

Once i had the VPN setup i wanted to test it out so i logged into a remote computer i had at a client’s site and connected to my VPN successfully, I then started a transfer of about 10GB just as a test(one file). It started ok but then when I looked at the speed it never went above about 500KBytes/s I found this a little odd because the client as about 25Mbit/s download and 10Mbit/s upload and i have 50Mbit/s download and 25Mbit/s upload. I also know it is not either of the computers doing the transfer because the home server is built on a 6 core amd FX6100 (overkill i know but i got a super duper good deal on it) with a SSD boot drive and 8gb of ram, everything is gigabit on both ends and both sites have high end small business routers but nothing to crazy.

So once i ruled out the speed of the computers i looked at the actual connection I was getting on the VPN on the WHS 2011 box a, i logged into the WHS box and checked out task manager and noticed that the RAS (Dial-in) interface aka the VPN connection sat around 5-6Mbit/s connection which i found odd, it used on average 75% of the connection at all times. I know there is nothing on either of the connections because it is after hours at the client’s location and i know what is happening on my connection (nothing)

By my calculations I should have about 1.2MBytes/s upload/download using the VPN on the remote site, I calculated this by figuring they had a 10Mbit/s upload which is 1280KBytes/s or about 1.2MBytes/s but I was only getting about half of that.....and i can’t figure out why.

Is it:

  • A limit of the VPN
  • Miss configuration
  • Or simply i am not going to be to saturate the connation completely?
