Manageability "In Progress": Server not loading

$

Server manager displays "In Progress" in the manageability section of my server.. I am running server 2012R1 as my DC/DNS server. In my domain I have two accounts; my admin and my user account. I have tried both accounts and when using the user account, I elevate server manager. This works fine both ways netbook. Both machines have the same GPOs applied and the desktop machine has a fresh install of Windows 8.1. I have also tried turning off the firewall on the desktop machine. The desktop is connected with CAT5 and the netbooks is using WIFI. Everything else works fine. I can use shares, RDC, UNC, and other services just fine from the desktop. I have been searching for some time for a resolution for this issue.

Windows Server 2012 R2 BPA issue

Good day Experts,

I have recently deployed two Windows Server 2012 R2 Domain controllers to a new site. Everything looks good so I'm currently busy with the final configurations which includes the BPA scans. I have resolved one or two issues so far but I'm struggling to get one of the warnings resolved.

The following below is the direct text from the BPA warning.

Title:
Srv.sys should be set to start on demand

Severity
Warning

Date:
2013/11/15 10:21:58 AM

Category:
Configuration

Problem:
Srv.sys is not set to start on demand.

Impact:
Client computers will not be able to access file shares and other Server Message Block (SMB)-based network services on this computer.

Resolution
Set Srv.sys to start on demand.

                   http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=246875

It seems straight forward enough but I cant get any information telling me how to resolve it for Windows server 2012 R2. Even the link provided by the BPA is not correct, or it seems as if Microsoft has not yet populated the actual web link with the warning information. It just displays the following information:

Windows Server Future Resources

Updated: August 10, 2011

The document that you are attempting to access is not available yet.

Is there anybody out there that has resolved this error before and can assist me with a resolution?

Correcting Error Code #80246007...

The proposed solution to correcting error code #80246007...

Solution:

1. Open the Registry editor. To do so, Click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then click regedit.exe in the Programs list.In the User Account Control dialog box, click Continue.

2. Navigate to the following registry keysHKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders

3. The correct and default value forAppData should be %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming. To change the value, double click on Appdata, then change the string in the value data field.

4. Close the Registry editor, and try again Windows Update again. (A reboot shouldnot be required.)

5. If the problem persists, repeat the steps 2 through 4 with the following registry keys:

· HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

· HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\

I've tried the solution above and when I drill down from HKLM\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders the "AppData" key is called "Common AppData" and it's value is "%ProgramData%".

Should I still change it to "%UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming"?

This is on a 64-Bit Server 2008 box.

ServicesPipeTimeout doesn't work

Hi

I have a Windows Server 2008 R2 64 bit server with SqlServer 2008 R2. Sql Server Reporting Service fails to start with these two errors:

"The SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service failed to start due to the following error:
The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion." EventID=7000

"A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the SQL Server Reporting Services (MSSQLSERVER) service to connect." EventID=7009

According to several internet sources (e.g. http://goo.gl/EZdsCH) I increased the ServicesPipeTimeOut by Regedit (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control) to the Decimal value 120000 then restarted the server but nothing is changed. The timeout error message continues to tell me the 30000 milliseconds timeout was reached. It seems that ServicesPipeTimeOut entry isirrelevant to the Service Control Management.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help

Server manageability 2012 R2 from windows 8.1 "In progress.."

The laptop that I have is running windows 8.1 and will not get past the 'in progress' notification when running server manager in the RSAT features.

Any server running 2012 R2 in the network can pull up the manageability of any other server in only a few seconds.

No idea why this is happening the way it is - suggestions?

Thanks

Windows update KB2964444 broke Event Logging Service and SQL Agent Service on Windows Server 2008 R2

$

I got the following problem:

I discovered that on my Windows Server 2008R2 machine the event logging stopped working on 04/May/2014 at 03:15.

Also, SQL Agent Service won't run

The only change that day was security update KB2964444 - Security Update for Internet Explorer 11 for Windows Server 2008 R2for x64-based Systems, that was installed exactly 04/May/2014 at 03:00. Apparently, that's what broke my machine...

When I try to start Windows Event Log via net start eventlog or via Services panel, I get an error:

C:\Users\Administrator>net start eventlog
The Windows Event Log service is starting.
The Windows Event Log service could not be started.

A system error has occurred.

System error 2 has occurred.

The system cannot find the file specified.

I tried:

  1. restarted the OS (virtual on the host's VMWare).
  2. re-checked the settings in services menu -they are like in the link.
  3. checked the identity in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\eventlog - the identity is NT AUTHORITY\LocalService
  4. gave all Authenticated Users full access to C:\Windows\System32\winevt\Logs
  5. ran fc /scannow - Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
  6. went to the file %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log - all clean, [SR] Repairing 0 components

EDIT: Uninstalled the recent system updates and rebooted - didn't help

EDIT: Sysinternals Process Monitor results when running start service from services panel (procmon in elevated mode):

I also checked for the presence of wevtsvc.dll in the place and it's there.

  2. Also, I tried to capture all events with path containing 'event' and got following events firing every several seconds:

  3. Also, I tried to capture all the events containing 'file', excluding w3wp.exe, chrome.exe, wmiprvse.exe, wmtoolsd.exe, System and it shows NO attempts to access any file ih the time I try to start the event logger (if run from cmd - there are several hits by net executable, not present if run from the panel).

Unable to do anything with Features and Roles in Windows Server 2008 Server Manager

For starters, the server I'm trying to modify is running Windows Server Standard Service Pack 1, 64-bit.

I recently took over development on a website on this server, and I noticed that the SMTP service is not installed.  I went into Server Manager to install it, and ran into the error "Unexpected error refreshing Server Manager: No signature was present in the subject. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800B0100)".  Upon further inspection, I noticed that in Windows Update, the Service Pack 2 update has failed many times.  I attempted to install it again (first using Windows Update, and then the stand alone installer) and again it failed.

While perusing forums, I saw instructions regarding the System Update Readiness Tool.  I downloaded it, installed, and the results of CheckSUR.log are below:

I checked the Windows Update History, and saw that the problem update, 2416400, had failed to install many times.  When I went to download the stand alone installer for this update, I could not find one specifically for Windows Server 2008.  There was one for Windows Server 2008 R2, but attempting to install it gave me an error that it did not apply to my platform, as expected.

I basically don't know where to go from here.  Installing the SMTP Service on the server is a high priority, but I can't seem to get around this blocker.

Thanks.
