Fresh install of Windows Server 2012 R2 but cannot add roles or update server

Hello all,

I've just installed Windows Server 2012 R2 on a server and have updated it.

I am having two problems.

1. When I start the server and log in as the Local Administrator account it opens up Server Manager and it comes up with an error on the flag at the top saying the Automatic refresh failed.

It also has a red flag on Manageability, when I click in it, it gives me this message: Online - Cannot get role and feature data.

When I go to add a role it gives me a message saying The request to list features available on the specified server failed. The operation cannot be completed, because the server that you specified requires a restart.

2. I cannot update Windows and always fails.

I have looked through a lot of forums and have also tried the methods here:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13444.windows-server-2012-server-manager-troubleshooting-guide-part-ii-troubleshoot-manageability-status-errors-in-server-manager.aspx#Additional_resources

and here:

http://technet.microsoft.com/library/jj205470

I don't understand what is wrong with this server, it's a fresh install and is causing this problem.

Can somebody please help me with this problem.

Thanks,

Aminul

URGENT: AD users gets locked out repeatedly for no reason

Dear Friends,

Although we have many threads on  this, my scene is different.

I couldn't justify my management whether it is an attack or a configuration issue.

Actual network Diagram

Internet - > Perimeter Router ->  Firewall->Anti Email Spam server (in DMZ)(192.168.112.13 / GITSSBG01)-> Firewall-> Exchange server + AD (internal)

Background : There was a merger/aquisition of X and Y companies where the  domain controller (not all users but Only few users say[ (50 users which includes CEO, few directors)] of a X company (e.g microsoftmany.com) has been merged / migrated to  Y Company (e.g microsoftone.com).

Now for some reasons these 50 user accounts are getting locked out randomly for last 2-3 years and now even at a faster pace (more than 150 attempts in 3 minutes).

I am pretty much confident that it is not an activesync issue, application integration issue or service account issue, password change issue or conficker issue.

Because Activesync : should happen for all the users at slower pace

Application Integration : Event id and logs doesn't show that info

Service account : Cannot be service account as 50 users are getting locked out.

I used account lock out tools from Microsoft / Netwrix but all pointing to one server (that is Anti Spam Mail server) which is using Symantec Brightmail Anti spam solution.

For your information : This server is part of a domain and also used as mail relay service.

For my surprise, i could see the following on the event viewer on that (192.168.113.12/Bright mail Server)

On Security logs I can see the following:

The most confusing part is why is it happening for old users and not for new users in the domain.

Need your support or input on this. Thanks

Does sysvol migration in windows 2008 R2 DC, requires any specific steps, if the AD Data are stored not in C drive of the server?

With one of our client, the windows 2008 R2 Active directory data are stored on D drive of the PDC (NTDS DATA, NTDS Logs and SYSVOL) and on the other 2 Dcs, they are on different drives too.

So my question when we do the sysvol migrations to DFS, do we have to add any specific command or script other than the usual migration commands?

I hava a Cisco 3400 ME with single physical port available for cable connection.The ISP give me an interface IP = 89.120.29.89 for act as gateway for host IP, which is next in sequence 89.120.29.90.The host computer  is a dual Xeon computer with two NIC cards one for LAN and one for WAN.

The scopes : to install a windows 2008 server R2 between public network and private network.

    The desired configuration :

To have WS2008R2 installed with his roles behind a RRAS  a. without VPN ;   b. with VPN and to have WAN access for client computers from private LAN have Windows 7 OS.(The LAN pool of address 192.168.0.1-255).

First step : To have internet access in browser (I use Google chrome) (no take to consider DNS or AD rolesi reinstalled a clean windows 2008 server no dns or AD roles installed ,only RRAS role single role installed , the simplest role configuration)

Network configuration :

WAN NIC, on top of link stack in Control Panel/Network and Sharing Connections:

Scheduled tasks did not display after domain join

I have a Windows 2008 R2 Enterprise Virtual Machine, patched to the latest Microsoft Hotfixes/Patches available.  This server was a member of a Workgroup and was joined to a domain.  As part of the domain join process the server was renamed, rebooted, then successfully joined to the domain.

After the domain join the scheduled tasks that were working & displaying when the server was in a Workgroup would not display or run at all.  I did a shutdown and startup of the VM to make sure it was a clean startup of the server and it did not resolve the issue.  There were a couple of AT commands that I temporarily renamed thinking they may have been causing a hang of the scheduler service.  Neither of these attempts resolved the issue.

I finally placed the server back in a workgroup and the issue was resolved.  At first I thought it might be Domain GPO related but I also joined two other Windows 2008 R2 servers to the same domain and the Computers were in the same OU within AD and they did not experience the problem.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what might have caused this issue?

So far my searches have not turned up an explanation as to why this particular issue occurred.

Device CAL activation

What administrator tool do I use to active device cals on a single server?  I recently installed Server 2012 R2  on a stand along server.

I purchased a server license and 50 device cals.  I was able to activate the server with no problems. The support center told me to

use Remote Desktop to active the cals.  Will this work if I have only a single server?

LDAP works with no issues

I have deleted the certificate, and had a new one issued from the domain CA, still doesn't work.

The certificate path shows ok, but could it be something with the Microsoft CA? Or theDomain Controller Authentication Template?

LDP.EXE returns this;

-----------

0x0 = ldap_unbind(ld);

ld = ldap_sslinit("SERVERNAME_FQDN_HERE", 636, 1);

Error 0 = ldap_set_option(hLdap, LDAP_OPT_PROTOCOL_VERSION, 3);

Error 81 = ldap_connect(hLdap, NULL);

Server error: <empty>

Error <0x51>: Fail to connect to SERVERNAME_FQDN_HERE.

UPDATE:

I used this link (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321051) to get a certificate request from an InCommon CA.  I had trouble adding it, but did get it into the proper place (I think).  No change, it did not help.

Hello,

I am trying to start start a service and it begins to load and they fails out with the following error "Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely manner." I have gone in the registry and added the longer record but I am still unable to start the service. Any help or ideas (i have read the KB articles) would be greatly appreciated.

Critical_Object_termination 0x000000f4 ntoskrnl.exe on Terminal Server

Hi there,

This morning i was greeted by a crashed terminal server.
Here is where the fun starts...
Because our network manager is on holiday, i am promoted to temporary technician...
Luckily i managed to call our Network manager and he said i should check the dump files and google for an answer.... so i did.

When i read the dumpfile, which wasnt easy since it won't open in Word or something... i saw the following error "Critical_Object_termination 0x000000f4 ntoskrnl.exe".
When i googled this, it resulted in various possible causes ranging from overheated systems to faulty SSD firmware to drivers that not happy with
eachother.

Sadly, my computer knowledge ends there... i cant make heads or tails from the dumpfile and i was hoping some of you could shed some light on the matter.
I have the dump files, but i cant seem to upload them here.
If anyonewants to help, i can send them to you.

Its a Terminal Server 2008 R2 i am told.

If you need any more info, please ask :)

Thanks in advance
