Server Manager 2012 : Configuration refresh failed with the following error: Invalid class

$

When we start Server Manager on Server 2012 the flag lights up Red almost immediately with the error:

Configuration refresh failed with the following error: Invalid class.

What we’ve tried so far:

sfc /scannow  [reported no errors]

Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth [Completed to 100% ]

Get-windowsfeature returns: Invalid class

This is a file/print server, running DFS.   When running DFS Management from Server Manager we don’t see the Replication section at the bottom. We can run MMC and manually add DFS Management then Replication shows up.

Where do I look to start diagnosing this error?

What should be the Preferred DNS Server for a new DNS Server or for a new forest?

Hi,

Before installing and configuring DNS and AD on Windows Server 2012 R2, I need to understand,

'What should be the Preferred DNS Server for a new DNS Server or for a new forest?'

Scenario 1: Windows Server 2012 R2 is as a Host OS.

Scenario 2: Windows Server 2012 R2 is as a Guest OS on VMware Workstation.

Please guide me for both scenarios.

I did Google Search and I found three options; either 127.0.0.1 (loopback address) or 8.8.8.8 or IP address assigned to the server. In case of Loopback address, why Loopback address is used as the Preferred DNS Server?

Server manager in Windows 10 has disappeared

Hello all,

10 days ago, we installed RSAT for Windows 10 at laptop with Windows 10 Pro .

After some issues we had working configuration where:

Server Manager ans Hyper-V Manager WAS with connection to 2 physical servers: HYPER-V2012R2 and WINDOWS SERVER STANDARD 2012R2.

One week after, Hyper-V Manager continues to work and connect fine.

But, Server Manager disappeared from administrative tools, from pinned, from start menu. Even search of complete disk didn't give result. We tried reinstall of RSAT, but with no success.  Server manager still missing in our Windows 10 Pro laptop.

Suggestions? Advises?

Thanks!

Server Core 2012 Features Won't Install- Couldn’t complete the Feature install Undoing changes

We have two Server core  2012 R2 servers that started out as life as Server 2012 R2 Gui. They are domain controllers. The other day I tried to install a feature on both servers. The servers installed the feature just fine. The server ask to reboot. We reboot the server and when we log back into the server we see the following command:

Couldn’t complete the Feature install Undoing changes

Any feature you install the server acts the same way  in that it rolls back the install of the feature.

Has anyone seen this issue.

Server Manager - Role and Feature refresh failed - The Deployment Provider failed to initialize DISM Error 0x80070583

Hi! Hope someone can help me out here -

We installed a Dell PowerEdge T620 running Windows Server 2012 R2 image back in September of 2014.

Everything seems to work fine except the Server Manager itself. It always has a "refresh failed" error. See below:

"Role and Feature refresh failed - The Deployment Provider failed to initialize DISM Error 0x80070583"

Usually when the system reboots, it's fine for a time (all green, showing all services & roles), then inevitably goes back to the above error.

Not sure if related to the above problem, but the nightly automatic backups don't seem to work either. I can run the auto job manually, that's fine, but it won't automatically trigger at 9pm like it should.

Also note:

1) When the system was setup, it was setup as <servername.domain.com> instead of what it should be <servername.domain.local> (our domain website is hosted someplace else).

Event Logs

Server Manager - Deployment Provider

Event ID: 1308

Internal fatal error. Op: ExecuteEnumerationCommand_RemoveRequestKey_Failed hResult: Catastrophic failure

AND

Server Manager - Management Provider

Event ID: 49

Get server feature task failed, error: A device attached to the system is not functioning..

Any help would be greatly appreciated - I've been searching for an answer to this for months and have only found these questions, but few answers. Thanks!!!

Group Policy issue

Hi Good evening all, I have an issue with group policy while applying Screensaver.

Screensaver is not getting applied on client machines (Win 7 OS)

I have two forest ABCD.NET with 2012 two DC’s and XYZ.NET with 2003 R2 two DC’s and I have trust between these domains.

I have a Win7 client machines few citrix package and few machines are physical machines in the environment in both domain and machines are present in different OU’s.

ISSUE: None of the screen savers are getting applied on the machine other than default windows screensavers.

I have done the following steps but still issue persists.

  • I have created screen saver policy for computers and applied in domain level and restricted for servers by security group deny group policy in advance.
  • We tried with multiple policy its not getting applied
  • Enforce the policy still failed
  • Linked the policy to particular OU still sailed
  • Moved client machine to test OU restarted the machines and applied only screensaver policy still failed.
  • Provided read access in advance tab and tried still failed
  • Checked any process or services over raiding the policy - NA
  • Screensaver copied to client machine applied its working fine
  • Done some registry setting also but result is same.

Can someone help me in resolving the issue.

Cant remove accidentally added DC

Hi,

A local file server have accidentally been designated a Domain Controller on our domain.
Whenever I try to remove this DC I receive this error message:

"Active Directory Domain Services could not transfer the remaining data in directory partition CN=Schema,CN=Configuration,DC=[Domain name], DC=[Domain name]", DC=com to Active Directory Domain Controller [DC name].[Domain name].com.

"The RPC server is unavailable" "

Now for some background info; our two DC:s are located in an amazon VPC, so both are currently offsite (I know we should have at least one locally and that will be changed but this is how it's currently set up), so our DCs do not share the same DNS as our machines here in the office (and this file server is a physical one in on of our offices). I assume that this might be the cause of the issue?

How do I go about removing this DC? Currently some User and Computer Objects are crated in this "faulty" DC and are not propagated properly to our real DC:s, this in turn causes computers to lose their domain trust.

I'm relatively new to managing Windows Servers in this way and found this thread: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/4eea7da1-aacf-4708-9c31-1ec0f1ef46cb/cant-remove-dc-role?forum=winserverDS
Which seems to contain very useful info, is Brian Borgs info relevant for my case as well (I assume it is, but I don't like to not be sure when dealing with the A/D)?

Thanks

Server manager gives me a message that I must be logged in as an Administrator to run it.

I had to have serveal Apps reloaded on our TS Web Access server(Server 2008 R2) and thus needed to republish the Apps.  When I went to do so I began experiencing issues with getting messages saying I am not logged in as an Admininstrator though I was using my Domain Admin credentials.  I went to server manager to double check that the built in Administrator group and get the message saying "Server Manager must be run as an Administrator - server manager must be run under a user account that is a member of the built in Administrators group. I have tried right clicking on server manager in Admin tools/computer manage and running AS as Administrator to no avail.  This is indeed bad news.  Is ther a backdoor way to access this built in group for adding users too?  Say maybe through the command prompt?  I have always used the GUI so I dont know if an alternate route exists.
