Telnet error "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

Hi,

Apologies if this is the wrong forum, the list isn't comprehensive enough, I couldn't find anything relating to Telnet.

We are experiencing an issue where our wireless barcode scanners which connect to a C# application on a windows 2008 R2 server via Telnet are being disconnected after only a few minutes.

The server Event Viewer shows the error "The semaphore timeout period has expired."

The User Profile Service often reports "Windows detected your registry file is still in use by other applications or services. The file will be unloaded now. The applications or services that hold your registry file may not function properly afterwards." within the same second.

The event has been showing in the event log for some time, typically 5-15 times per day, however this has recently increased to circa 200 times per day.

Recent changes include all windows updates, anti-virus updates etc, as well as firmware updates for all wireless access points and the wifi controller (we use a D-Link DWC-1000).

We've tried disabling the Anti Virus software and moving the application to a different server (Windows 2012 R2), but this didn't help.

When testing with only 1 or 2 users it seemed fine, but as soon as all 8 users connected, then the problem re-occurred.

We haven't found any specific routine that we can use to reproduce the problem repeatedly, it just seems to happen randomly.

We've also tried connecting from a wired PC and this didn't encounter the problem, although this may be an red herring as the testing done wasn't in a live environment because its not possible to scan warehouse items from our office.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Unable to see devices in Server Dashboard

Hello all,

I recently migrated all workstations at a client location from a machine running Server 2003 to a new server running Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

I could not use the connect utility for some reason. It stalled out on every PC.

I had to manually join the server by using My Computer > Properties > Advanced Settings > and leaving current domain and joining a work group then logging in as a local user then adding new server name to domain area... I joined domain successfully every time... I really need each workstation to be seen by the server dashboard so I can insure machines are backing up to the new server, security patches are installed, etc... What are my options?

PLEASE HELP!! DC unable to open AD, DNS, Unable to Demote?? Any Help Appreciated

Hi,

I currently have 3 Domain Controllers within my Domain. Each is located at a different site with a site-to-site VPN connecting them. DC1 and DC2 are able to replicate their DNS records and AD DS information fine. However, Domain Contoller 3 appears to be unable to do anything other than host DHCP role.

When trying to open DNS MMC it comes up with a console asking me to 'Connect to a DNS Server' and when i click 'this computer' i get a message saying 'access is denied. Would you like to add it anyway?'. If i choose to add it anyway it opens the DNS MMC but DC3 has a red symbol over it looking like a 'no-entry' sign. Trying to do anything else appears to be greyed out and i only have 'Global Logs' and DNS Events under the tree.

In the events log i have error after error saying the following 'The DNS server was unable to open Active Directory. This DNS ever is configured to obtain and use information from the directory for this zone and is unable to load the zone without it. Check that AD is functioning properly and reload it.

When opening Active Directory Administrative Centre i get an error message saying 'Cannot connect to any domain. Refresh or try again when connection is available.'

I have been advised to demote this as a domain controller but when trying to do this i get 'An error occurred. DFS Replication: The target principal name is incorrect.'

Sorry to ramble on but i am really confused with this whole process. I am unable to gain access to the physical site so re-installing server 2012 from scratch is not an option for me. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Unable to view collections in server manager > remote desktop services. Just keeps on trying to refresh/update. Lots having the same issue, is there a fix, or is it even been looked into by MS?

Had to roll back my OS just so I can do most of my job as I'm reliant on RSAT.

Repair File System Errors

Hi all,

I have a server which is a VM. The VM has a D drive which is a vmdk sat on in a datastore which is on a HP MSA storage.

I don't understand how there can be disk errors if the disk in question is a vmdk NOT a direct attached disk.

I see server manager is noticing the disk has issues - and there is an option in server manager to Repair File System Errors which I assume is just a chkdsk?

Will this be ok to run? But what is wrong with the disk? It cant be a physical issue as no other VMs have this issue.

Thanks

Server Manager Breaks with only WinRM SSL Configured

We are just beginning to deploy 2012 R2 to our domain. We have winrm https configured on all of our 2008 R2 servers(we don't manage these through server manager yet). On 2012 servers we delete the HTTP listener and configure the HTTPs listener, however in server manager we get 'online verify winrm 3.0 service is installed running and required firewall ports are open winrm ssl'

If I enable http listener, this goes away and we can manage using server manager.

If i go through powershell with just HTTPS configured, I can enter-pssession with the -usessl flag.

Is this a bug in server manager that it can't handle ssl? Is there a way to configure it?

Server Manager displaying "Console cannot refresh until computer is restarted"

Hi everyone,

I have 2 servers (both running Server 2008 R2) that are having this problem.  One server is a virtual server hosted on a Server 2008 x64 machine running Hyper-V and the other is a  physical stand-alone server.  The virtual server is running ADDS as well as DNS and the physical server is running System Center Essentials 2010 as well as Symantec Endpoint Protection Manager.  I've installed KB947821 on both servers to see if any files are missing, but the CheckSUR and CheckSUR.persist files indicate that no errors were detected.  I can't find any other suggestions for fixing this problem beyond installing KB947821 and replacing missing files.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for fixing this problem (short of a reinstall)?  Please let me know if any additional information is needed.  Thanks!

svchost.exe_ProfSvc processes crashing on Server 2008

We have a server installed with Server 2008 SP2, which acts as our PDC, VPN, and File Server.  We have multiple shares on the server, that PC's in the office map network drives to.  We are getting svchost.exe crashes, which cause the server to become unresponsive.  I can't seem to pinpoint what is happening when the process crashes, the server can be idle with no-one logged in, and the errors will occur.  The only way to fix the issue, is to reboot the server.  I tried some things I found on google (not sure which one worked), but the server was stable for awhile.  Now the svchost.exe_ProfSvc is crashing and causing the server to be unreponsive again.  After the svchost.exe crashes, I also get errors for not being able to register with DCOM in time.

New software requires a higher operating system on server. Where can I purchase Server 2012 and instructions for installation?

Who Installed This Software?

My small company has a SharePoint services 3.0 sp2 installed on Windows 2003 server. I am responsible to migrate their AD forest and to decommission this SharePoint site including Windows 2003 server very soon. This server and SharePoint Services was in production years before I came aboard and no one know who installed it?

How do I find out under which account this SharePoint Services 3.0 was installed?

If I have to look into registry key and find out the SID of the account that was used to install it, my next question would be how do I find out the account name by its SID number instead of reading each individual AD account? There are over 300 of AD User Accounts, thanks.

sc sdset schedule not working

A Nessus plugin 44676 audit scan revealed this issue: "SMB Insecurely Configured Service" Description At least one insecurely configured Windows service was detected on the remote host. Unprivileged users can modify the properties of these affected services.

An unprivileged, local attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary commands as SYSTEM. Solution Ensure the 'Everyone' group does not have ChangeConf, WDac, or WOwn permissions. Refer to the Microsoft documentation for more information. See Alsohttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/914392 http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms685981(VS.85).aspx Output •   The following service has insecure permissions for Everyone: •
•     Task Scheduler (Schedule) : DC, WD, WO

I copied the security descriptor from another machine that doesn't have this issue, with sc sdshow schedule. Then I tried to set it on the affected machine withsc sdset schedule SDDL_security_descriptor. But when I rebooted the machine and then checked again with the sdshow, it was back to what it was before. It seems to stay if I make some other edit to the Spooler service; so, maybe it's just schedule that can't be changed.  Does anyone know how to make this work or another remediation for this finding?

Server Manager requests HTTP/HOSTNAME001.domain.fqdn, that SPN is assigned to a service account, Kerberos Security Error ensues

$

I have a server in a data centre that I use for remote admin of other servers in the same site. I have added all of the servers in to Server Manager to get a dashboard view of the site. I am unable to add one of the servers to Server Manager, getting the error "Kerberos Security Error". Specifically:

The Kerberos client received a KRB_AP_ERR_MODIFIED error from the server hostname001$. The target name used was HTTP/HOSTNAME001.domain.fqdn. This indicates that the target server failed to decrypt the ticket provided by the client...

This server is running IIS and a site is running under the context of a service account that has the SPN HTTP/HOSTNAME001.domain.fqdn assigned to it. I am aware that the "fix" described elsewhere is to either remove this SPN from the service account (not possible in this case) or to add the server to the trusted hosts list so that it uses NTLM auth (which seems ridiculous).

My question is, why is Server Manager making Kerberos ticket requests for HTTP/HOSTNAME001.domain.fqdn when this is the sort of SPN that may well be associated with a service account, especially when there's a perfectly good WSMAN/HOSTNAME001.domain.fqdn SPN that is registered by default to the computer account object? No-one in their right mind is going to mess around with the WSMAN/ SPNs, so surely this should be the default request, right?

Is there a registry key somewhere that will change the Kerberos ticket request type from HTTP/ to WSMAN/ ? Or is this something that can be changed in WinRM/WMF v5, or changed in an update rollup for Server 2012/2012R2?

Thanks!

SERVER 2012 R2 STANDARD X509 CERTIFICATES EXPORT TO ORACLE FOR SINGLE SIGN ON

Hi all, running a server 2012 R2 standard with just AD installed. I need to be able to export my X509 certs to an Oracle system as part of a Single Sign On (SSO) solution. I do not have the server configured as a Certificate Authority and ADFS is not installed. The question is, would I be able to export the X509 Username attribute/User filter attribute and Certificate mapping information to Oracle without enabling CA or ADFS on my server?

Thank you in advance for any assistance! I am well versed in several Server OS but not in Oracle and also not in SSO.
