I cannot receive updates on my server which brought me to this page http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-update-error-80072ee2#1TC=windows-7

Which says to add exceptions to my firewall, but my firewall is disabled.

What is the next step?

Server Manager/Powershell Taskbar Icon Removal Server 2012

$

After scanning for two days for a Group Policy setting that allows me to unpin these two icons from my users taskbar and browsing the support threads both here and abroad, I am at a loss as to how to do this through group policy on my terminal server.

Situation:  I have disabled Server manager from running but the icon continues to be present on the taskbar for all of my users on the terminal server.

Mission:  Find a way to remove the two icons using group policy.

Execution:  Task 1:  Find Filesystem in GP.  Many suggestions have you add to the Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Policies>Windows Settings>Security Settings>File System section in gpedit.msc.  This setting is simply not there.  I have found it in Local Computer Policy>Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>System>Filesystem.

Task 2:  Add files to Filesystem.

%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell.lnk

%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Windows PowerShell\Windows PowerShell (x86).lnk

%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Server Manager.lnk

%AllUsersProfile%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools\Windows PowerShell Modules.lnk

In the right click menu you do not have the option to add anything to this section.

Question:  If we are not able to add these files to the Filesystem section, how do we turn off the icons?  Is there a better way that does not involve a script?  Should the GPO be created from the DC?

Network Connection not Establishing on Boot Up, due to Exchange Services failing

Hello,

I am having issues with Exchange Services not starting on my Virtual Machine.  I believe this is the reason why the VM is not establishing a network connection--it shows a little blue ring of death and it pretty much delays everything that I attempt to do on the VM.  I have been looking into it and when I go to Services.msc, I notice a few Exchange Services that are still attempting to start...but they never do start.  The services are Microsoft Exchange Information Store, Transport, RPC Client, and Throttling.  So far, I have logged in via Safe Mode w/ Networking and the internet connection is successfully established.  This leaves me to believe that one (or more) of my failing Exchange services are attempting to connect to the network before the connection is established...or something of that nature; I'm just trying to figure out how I should go about troubleshooting this.  Any help/assistance is appreciated.

Virtual Server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard with 8GB RAM with more than 10 users connect at a time

Hi All,

Can anyone shed some light on the above issue. The above server is a virtual server running on Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard and the physical box is a Cisco UCS 220 M3 Server with VMWare. All the slots in the Cisco server are all utilized and there is no way to increase new RAM cards into the slots. However, for short term, we can only increase the virtual memory by decreasing virtual memory from the other server and increase virtual memory for this most accessed server.

If anyone had tried before, your kind assistance is highly appreciated.

Help required with ADFS 3.0 client certificate authentication

$

Hi,

I am currently working on integrating ADFS 3.o for Single Sign On to some 3rd party services along with PKI solution. The basic requirement is that I should be able to choose client authentication certificate as an authentication method in ADFS and then federate user credentials to 3rd party trust for single-sign-on.

I had done this successfully with ADFS 2.0 and that setup is working fine. I have the setup as ADFS 3.0 client authentication method enabled. When I open browser to logon, the ADFS 3.0 page displays a message as "Select a certificate that you want to use for authentication. If you cancel the operation, please close your browser and try again." but the certificates are not displayed for selection.

The certificates are valid and have valid chaining to CA. Could someone help me resolve this issue?

Thanks!

Server 2012 r2 — Opening firewall on remote Server Core machine for MMC (Comp. management) access

MCSA student here. I'm having some difficulty with this one.

Same subnet and workgroup.

Server 1 is a physical 2012 R2 server. Server 2 is a Server Core running as a VM on a workstation.

As part of an exercise, I added server 2 to All Servers on Server 1's Server Manager. I logged in and saved login info via "Manage As" and via right clicking Server 2 in All Server I can perform all tasks except for "Computer Management". Now here comes the part where I must open up the firewall ports on the remote machine (Server 2) to allow remote Computer Management access.

My book provides these steps to perform the first part, which is to allow me to use one MMC snap-in (Adv. Firewall) remotely so I can open up the rest of the firewall ports. I figure it's easier to do this because doing via Server Core CLI (cmd or powershell) is very tedious less efficient.

Here are the instructions: https://i.sli.mg/XpPcrK.png -Mind you, I ran the command listed in step # 3 by opening powershell via All Servers, right clicking Server 2's powershell and the command seems to have gone thru (no error).

The process fails for me at step 5, where I'm to add the MMC Adv. firewall snap-in. I get this error:https://i.sli.mg/ZDuaF9.png

Any idea of what I'm doing wrong or what the issue is here? I appreciate any help, thanks.

Server is hitting the AD with a domain account

Hi Guys,

I'm facing a strange issue, one of my server (windows server 2008 std R2) is hitting the active directory with a domain account and due to that domain user account is getting locked out very frequently, say in a minute its gets locked out (we've policy to lock out the account after 5 wrong pw try). I got this info from event security log number 4740 on the DC, it simple shows account that was locket out and the caller computer is that server. The server has SQL server 2008 installed, I already checked all the services and make sure if any SQL instance is using that account to authenticate but that user account is not configured anywhere. Just to make sure I shutdown the server for 15 minutes and user account didn't locked out for 15 minutes, I have downloaded a 'lockoutstatus' tool from Microsoft to check the lock out status of the account. I already deleted the user profile from 'My computer properties - advance tab as earlier user was using this account to login on the server but its been months we given another account to him and since then he stopped using this account on the server. I tried to reset the PW and disabled the account for couple of hours to see if server stop trying to hit the AD but nothing worked. My AD is running on the windows server 2008 std R2.

Please help what could be the solution for this issue? How do I identify who is using that account on the server?

Unable to locate servermanager.log

Hi,

I need to know which feature was installed when on Windows Server 2012 R2.

I found numerous responses that you can find this information in servermanager.log

However I am unable to locate that file anywhere.

Not in C:\Windows\Logs or in C:\Users\<username>\appdata\local\temp

Where do I find this file or how do I configure the server to create and use this file?

Event ID: 10028 - Server Manager won't manage other servers

$

Server Manager won't run Powershell on other machines, but will recognize that they are online and states that I need to verify that WinRM 3.0 service is installed, running, and that required firewall ports are open.

I've gone through the troubleshooting to fix this error, but none of the solutions so far have fixed it. This is the troubleshooting guide that I've been going through:

http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13444.windows-server-2012-server-manager-troubleshooting-guide-part-ii-troubleshoot-manageability-status-errors-in-server-manager.aspx

I'm a student doing a test environment where three servers are on the same domain and are on the same subnet, one is active directory and DNS server. When I add other servers to the Server Manager, the Manageability column shows that the target servers are unavailable.

In my course of researching I found by default that WinRM automatically has a firewall rule will not allow management access to machines on the same subnet. So I turned off the firewalls for all three servers and that's when I get the error mentioned at the top: Online - Verify WinRM 3.0 service is installed. . .

I've verified that WinRM 3.0 is installed, running, and configured. The firewalls are completely turned off. All three servers are Windows 2012 R 2 servers, and yet it still doesn't work. I added the the other two servers to the server manager via Active Directory on the server that is the domain controller.
